Spoiler : Lucille Fletcher (Violet Lucille Fletcher) Born Brooklyn, New York, March 28, 1912 Died Langhorne, Pennsylvania, August 31, 2000 Age 88 (stroke) After graduating from Vassar College she got a job as music librarian at CBS in New York. It was there she met Bernard Herrmann and they fell in love. Only her parents didn't approve of Benny Herrmann because he was Jewish but they continued to date (and she continued to work at CBS) until October 2, 1939, when they were married. She then became a freelance fiction writer. Her first radio script came about Benny and Lucille were out joy riding in Jersey City and they saw a homeless man hitchhiking near the Pulaski Skyway. That story became "The Hitch-Hiker." She wrote for other radio shows and wrote a libretto for an opera Benny wrote. Eventually, they moved to Hollywood and she wrote a couple of movie scripts. Benny then had an affair with Lucille's cousin. They divorced and married other people (Benny did marry the cousin).

Spoiler : Born in Brooklyn, New York; died 8/31/2000 at age 88 following a stroke at St, Mary's Hospital in Langhorne, Pennsylvania. Married and divorced from music composer Bernard Herrmann (1939-1948); novelist John Douglass Wallop (1949-1985 his death). Fletcher wanted to be a writer from childhood. Graduated from Vassar College in 1933 with a degree in English, then began her career during the depression working as a typist at CBS-Radio, then got her start as a radio scriptwriter when Norman Corwin adapted her short comic story, "My Client Curley" on Columbia Workshop (3/7/1940) for CBS. Writer for Suspense programs including The Hitchiker (9/2/1942); Sorry Wrong Number that had it's first airing on 5/25/1943, went onto being repeated 8 times, the last broadcast being 2/14/1960.

Spoiler : Sorry Wrong Number was made into two movies, a 1948 version starring Burt Lancaster and Barbara Stanwyck; a 1989 version that was a made-for-televsion movie starring Loni Anderson.

Spoiler : "The Clock - Bad Dreams" is one of the rare times when Elliott Lewis played a character with a foreign accent. In this case, Hungarian. His character is the painfully henpecked Bela Boczniak. "Boczniak" is Hungarian for "mushroom". An apt name, because mushrooms grow in the shadows, from rotting matter. Unfortunately, the script is just an overblown half-hour of this timid character being viciously tormented by his shrewish wife. As soon as it started, I knew how it would end. And I was dead right.

Spoiler : he was married to the composer Bernard Herrman who scored the first run of SUSPENSE from New York. During its initial weeks on air in mid 1942 Herrman mentioned his wife to Bill Spier, and her first script used on the show was The Hitch-Hiker, when Spier wanted to use Orson Welles to demonstrate the power of using a big name on this show. Welles had already done Ms Fletcher's play on his own CBS show about ten months earlier. After the show moved West, she contributed The Diary of Sophronia Winters with Agnes Moorehead, before her most famous script which was Sorry, Wrong Number, written with Ms Moorehead in mind.

Spoiler : Who knows about write Lucille Fletcher, writer of Sorry, Wrong Number? I just listed to an episode of The Clock 04-25-48 Bad Dreams and was surprised to hear she wrote it. I did not know her writing went beyond The program Suspense.

Spoiler : Let's not forget "My Client Curley", which is how she got her start. Norman Corwin read her story and adapted it for radio. You can hardly get further from "Wrong Number" than "Curley"
