Married and divorced actors Henri Lavorel (?-?); Captain Phillip Astley (1931-1940); Sterling Hayden (1942-1945); Life magazine publisher Andrew Heiskell (1950-1965); became a companion to the French actor Fernand Gravet (1965-?). She began her career as a school-teacher in England. London stage debut in 1927. Screen debut playing Rhoda Pearson in What Money Can Buy (1928). Hollywood screen debut playing Hope Ames in The Case Against Mrs. Ames (1936). Left acting in 1942 and became heavily involved with USO Camp Shows and War Bond Drives (Carroll lost a sister during the London blitz). She became an American citizen in 1943. Red Cross volunteer in Italy and France (awarded a French Legion Of Honor and the U.S.A. Medal Of Freedom). Last movie was playing Mrs Erlynne in Fan (1949).

Spoiler : On learning more about Madeleine Carroll. I was very impressed with her lifetime efforts off the screen. I also read her only child died prematurely in 1983. However I have not been able to find out how her daughter Anne Heiskell passed away. I would appreciate any insight people may have on this. This may not be the appropriate place to ask, but here’s hoping for an answer.
