Lanza, Mario (birth name was Alfredo Arnold Cocozza) Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 1/31/1921; died 10/7/1959 from complications of pneumonia and phlebitis which led to a heart attack while on vacation in Rome, Italy. After taking voice lesons, he made his singing debut in 1942 at The Tanglewood Music Festival held at Lenox, Massachusetts. Served in the U.S. Army (1942-1945), and made his movie debut in 1944 as an extra in Winged Victory while still in the Army. In 1945 after his discharge, he became a recording artist for the RCA Victor record label. Opera debut in Madame Butterfly (1947).

Host and star of The Mario Lanza Show on CBS-Radio (1951); NBC-Radio (1951-1952). Voted the best male classical voice in the Motion Picture-Radio Poll of 1952. Guest star on television programs including Shower Of Stars for CBS (1954).
