Spoiler : Martha left the Roach studio in 1927 because she wanted to move into feature films and play more dramatic roles. She eventually got frustrated with the types of roles she was being offered in the early 1930s in films and began doing live stage work. In 1936 she left Hollywood for New York and began a long run working in both on and off-Broadway plays. She also developed a very lucrative side business designing whimsical pieces of costume jewelry and that became a fashion craze in the late 1930s. During the 1950s-1960s she was living in San Juan Puerto Rico and became a world renown designer of women’s clothing and resort wear.
