Douglas, Melvyn (birth name was Melvyn Edouard Hesselberg) Born in Macon, Georgia 4/5/1901; died 8/4/1981 of heart problems and pneumonia in New York City. Married to actress (former congress woman) Helen Gahagan (1929-1980 her death). During WWI, Douglas tried to enlist in the Canadian Army when he was 13; enlisted in the U.S. Army at age 15; at age 42 enlisted in the U.S. Army WWII as a private, was discharged as a major. Screen debut in Tonight Or Never (1931). Academy Awards for Hud (1962); Being There (1979). Last movie was Ghost Story (1981).
