Spoiler : Still very beautiful, but it's a shame we lost her at 68, still very youthful. I love watch her movies, especially "The Scarlet pimpernel". She was so very beautiful, even it was black and white and dresses of the times.

Spoiler : Have a wonderful story about Merle who was indeed quite a beauty. Michael Korda who ran Simon and Schuster Publishing for years was at one time her nephew, Merle being married to Michael's uncle, producer Alex Korda. Korda wrote a fictionalized version of her life called Queenie which was turned into a TV miniseries. I saw an interview with him in which he talked about Merle. He said she was born in India to a British mother and a mother with partial Indian ancestry. When she came to England she brought her mother with her, but not wishing to have her mixed background known, introduced her to one and all as her maid. Merle throughout her life claimed to have been born in Tasmania, an island off the coast of Australia. After achieving great success she foolishly accepted an invitation to return to Tasmania and accept an award as the island's most famous descendant. While there they were eager to learn exactly where on the island she was born so that they could note it as an historic site. She said she really could not recall, but officials noting the island was so small they would simply drive her around and point out places hoping they might look familiar to her. Never having been there, this posed quite a problem for Merle. They drove her around for hours and stopped and pointed to various locations again and again, only to have Merle say none were places she could recall. She was happy when they ran out of daylight and it came time for her to leave. Suffice to say she never returned there again. Korda also mentioned about her famous role in Wuthering Heights. In this great love story between Oberon as Cathy and Laurence Olivier as Heathcliff, it turned out that in real life the two stars could not stand each other. She accused him of spraying his lines and he in turn proclaimed she had unpleasant breath. Korda said during breaks in the action she could be heard yelling at Olivier, Spitting, spitting, spitting. And Olivier in response would shout bad breath, bad breath, bad breath.

Spoiler : Oberon, Merle (Estele Merle O'Brien Thompson, aka Queenie O'Brien) Born in Tasmania, Australia 2/19/1911; died 11/23/1979 of a massive stroke in New York City. Author David Ragan (Movie Stars of the 30's, etc) claims that Oberon was born as an illegitimate child of a British soldier and East Indian girl in Calcutta, India. Married and divorced Alexander Korda (1939-1945); cameraman Lucienne Ballard (1945-1949); Italian industrialist Bruno Pagliai (1957-1973); actor Robert Wolders (1975-1979 her death). She was raised in India. At age sixteen, she moved to London, England where she began her show business career using the name of Queenie O'Brien, and made her English screen debut in Wedding Rehearsal (1932). She met future husband Korda who changed her name to Oberon and advanced her career in Great Britain, and later America. Hollywood debut in Folies Bergere (1935).
