Born in Brooklyn, New York 6/24/1909; died 2/27/2006 of heart failure in Shoreline, Washington. Married to cellist Virginia Peterson (?-2006 his death). Educated at Columbia University.
Katims studied violin under Herbert Dittler, but switched to viola after completing his undergraduate study. Later he conducted orchestras in Boston, Israel, London, New York and Philadelphia. He also taught at Juilliard, and performed with the Budapest String Quartet.

Katims became associated with station WOR-Mutual-New York (1935-1943); NBC (1943). The Milton Katims Orchestra provided music for radio programs including The NBC Symphony (1943-1954); Serenade To America (1944-1946); Port Of Missing Hits on NBC (1945); The Eternal Light on NBC (1946-1948, again 1952-1954); Jack And Cliff on NBC (1948); Living on NBC (1948-1951); The Henry Morgan Show on NBC (1949-1950).

From 1954 to 1976 he was music director for the Seattle Symphony. From 1976 to 1984 he was artistic director for the School of Music at the University of Houston in Texas. Eventually he returned to Seattle. Katims and his wife wrote a memoir in 2004 titled, "The Pleasure Was Ours." At sometime during his career, he also taught at Juilliard School.
