One of the great character actors. And a great stage director. He and Cole Porter attended Yale together and collaborated on many shows in their early years. Apart from the man who came to dinner he was great in a film called holy matrimony where he played an eccentric British painter who fakes his own death so he doesn't have to be knighted and deal with the upper-class snobbery in England. It later became the basis of the musical darling of the day
