She was exceptional in the movie "The Heiress" with Montgomery Clift. Montgomery Clift was amazing in this movie too . My favorite part of the movie is the closing scene when he is outside in the dark pounding at the door and she is gracefully walking up the stairs as he shouts her name. It left me speculating if he really loved her or was he merely just after her money. That's what I loved about the movie. It left the audience in suspense and questioning his true motives. Loved it.

Born in Japan in 1916 to a British patent attorney and his actress wife, Olivia de Havilland succumbed to the lure of Thespis while attending high school in Los Gatos, CA, where she played Hermia in an amateur production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. The older sister of actress Joan Fontaine, de Havilland was spotted by famed director Max Reinhardt, who cast her in his legendary Hollywood Bowl production of the play. This led to her part in the Warner Bros. film adaptation of Midsummer in 1935, and being signed to a long-term contract wiht the company.

De Havilland came to prominence as a screen couple with Errol Flynn in adventure films such as Captain Blood (1935) and The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938). One of her best-known roles is Melanie Hamilton in the film classic Gone with the Wind (1939).

De Havilland also made news when she sued Warner Bros. for extending her seven-year contract by tacking on the months she'd been on suspension for refusing to take a part. The actress spent three long years off the screen, but she ultimately won her case, and the "De Havilland Law," as it would become known, effectively destroyed the studios' ability to virtually enslave their contractees by unfairly extending their contract time.

De Havilland departed from ingénue roles in the 1940s. Olivia was offered the role of Mary Hatch Bailey in It's a Wonderful Life (1946) after Jean Arthur turned it down, but she also turned it down because she didn’t want to work with ex-boyfriend James Stewart.

De Havilland won awards for her performances in To Each His Own (1946), The Snake Pit (1948), and The Heiress (1949), including two Academy Awards for Best Actress. After completing The Heiress, de Havilland spent several years on Broadway, cutting down her subsequent film appearances to approximately one per year.
