Born in Princeton, New Jersey 4/9/1898; died 1/23/1976 of a stroke in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Son of a runa-a-way slave minister. One of the first three Arican-Americans admitted to Rutgers (1915). Phi Beta Kappa four-letter-man, and was selected to play football for the American League. After attending Columbia Law School, he worked in a law firm until the acting bug bit him which led to his 1920 stage debut.

Robeson is noted for singing "Ballad For Americans" for Norman Corwin's Pursuit of Happiness program on CBS-Radio (1939-1940).

Robeson moved to Russia, but never gave up his American citizenship. Later when he sought return of his passport, he was denied (1950-1958). A Supreme Court ruling returned his passport, and he moved to England. Suffering ill health in the early 1960s, he returned to America in 1963.
