Born in Newport News, Virginia 3/29/1918; died 8/17/1990 of heart failure following surgery to replace a knee in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Married to the French Jazz drummer Louis Bellson (1952-?). African-American vocalist that began her career at age thirteen singing (with her tap-dancing brother Bill Bailey) at clubs around Washington, D.C. Vocalist with bands of Count Basie and Cottie Williams. Broadway debut in St. Louis Woman (1946). Screen debut in Variety Girl (1947). Guest star on television programs including The Texaco Star Theater (The Milton Berle Show) for NBC-TV (1948) and the NBC-TV special The Member Of The Wedding (1982). Host of The Pearl Bailey Show on ABC-TV (1971). Lulu Baker on Silver Spoons for NBC-TV (1984-1985).
