Born in Boston, Massachusetts 8/17/1900; died 2/17/1977 in New York City. Married to Mary Post (1932-?). Educated at Harvard and Christ's College. He was associated with The Atlantic Monthly Magazine and the publishing house of Simon and Shuster. His liberal leanings led him to author several controversial books, be an activist in prison reform, and serving as director of The American Civil Liberties Union, and president of The National Board of Review of Motion Pictures.
