Spoiler : Now this is an actor, I just watched Night of the Hunter, a must see. All his movies are mesmerizing. He captures the character.

Spoiler : We posted a video tribute to Robert Mitchum a year ago today and we generally make it a practice to wait two years before reposting our tribute videos, but we couldn't let Mitchum's 101st birthday go unremarked upon. We wrote to Mitchum in 1980 or so, asking him for an autographed photo. As we'd requested, we received a publicity photograph by return mail depicting him in the role of Philip Marlowe, as seen in Farewell, My Lovely. It was inscribed, “Cheers! Bob Mitchum.” We don’t know for certain whether it was signed by the man himself or by someone who did his signing for him, but we like to think that Mitchum, who didn’t brook phonies, wouldn’t bother to send out proxy signatures, that he’d either sign them himself or not at all.

Spoiler : I got his autograph when I was 13. He was filming a movie in my town. Cape May, NJ. I walked up to his '49 Ford truck after a scene. He was sitting in the pick up with Jan Michael Vincent. He asked me what did I want him to say on the paper. I was flustered. I said, "Anything". I thanked him and walked about a block and opened up the folded paper. It said, "Anything, Robert Mitchum".

Last movie was playing George Stevens in James Dean: Race With Destiny (released after his death in 9/1997). Songwriter that wrote The Ballad Of Thunder Road and The Whippoorwill. Both of the tunes were used in the 1958 movie Thunder Road for which he was star and writer.

Three actors in the same room! Stories will abound! His story telling was hilarious, complete with impeccable accents and dialects and he had some great ones. Very funny guy with very dry sense of humor. Coincidentally I was collecting episodes of old radio shows in those days and had his 1947 appearance in SUSPENSE, "Death at Live Oak" on cassette and brought it over to the house one day when I knew he'd be by. He was thrilled to get it cuz of course he had never heard it being as the shows were done live! One afternoon I had a meeting scheduled for 4 o'clock at the Goldwyn studios in Hollywood and was running late. I bolted up suddenly realizing the time and said, "Yikes, I gotta go. I have as meeting on a picture at Goldwyn guys. See ya later." Mitchum (Called himself The Goose" in those days) smiled as I headed for the door and said, "See whatcha can find for me." I laughed and said, "Damn man, you must get a script everyday." "I do," he said, "The same one." Miss him. I was in New York on a train when I read in the NY Times that he had passed on July 1, '97 just three weeks shy of his 80th birthday. The obit and biography took two pages!! There's a great book about him called, "Baby, I Don't Care" by Lee Server filled with the most amazing and incredible adventures the man had.
