Spoiler : actor RODDY McDOWELL (1928 – 1998), who was born on September 17th. He began his long acting career as a child in England, and then in the USA, in How Green Was My Valley, My Friend Flicka, and Lassie Come Home, and as an adult appeared most frequently as a character actor on radio, stage, film, and television. Later film appearances included Cleopatra (1963), in which he played Octavian (the young Emperor Augustus) and was believed to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor but was disqualified when the studio accidentally submitted him for Best Actor instead. Other films included It! (1966), in which he played a Norman Bates-like character reminiscent of Psycho; The Poseidon Adventure (1972), in which he played Acres, a dining room attendant; The Legend of Hell House (1973), in which he played a physical medium assigned to a team attempting to crack the secret of the Belasco House; "Bedknobs and Broomsticks", "That Darn Cat!," Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry (1974); Scavenger Hunt (1979) in which he played valet Jenkins. Agatha Christie's Evil Under the Sun (1982); "Funny Lady", Class of 1984 (1982); Fright Night (1985), in which he played Peter Vincent, a television host and moderator of telecast horror films; and Overboard (1987 with Goldie Hawn) in which he played a kind-hearted butler (and produced the film).

Spoiler : By all accounts, he knew a lot of dirt on a lot of Hollywood people, having worked there for donkeys years. But being a gentleman and a loyal friend to a lot of people he never once spoke badly of anyone. Perhaps he was intelligent enough to know that if you dish the dirt on someone, theyll do it back on you. Either way, he was a good friend and colleague.

Spoiler : I loved Roddy McDowell. One of my favorite roles of McDowell's was when he played "Bullwhip Griffin," in the Disney film. He was also great in a Twilight Zone episode, wherein he was an astronaut and was placed as an exhibit in a zoo. Toddy McDowell was also great in "The Legend of Hell House." I just read the novel by Richard Matheson that film was based on.

Spoiler : I'll always remember his wonderful performance in "Lassie Come Home". He was one of the great child actors, probably only second to Shirley Temple.

Spoiler : I enjoyed him in the planet of the apes movies iam not talking about the updated version iam talking about the orignal verisons of the planet of apes he is so talented besides he is a actor and director he is a great photographer as well

Spoiler : I never saw him give a bad performance. He also did some excellent audio work.

Spoiler : He and Elizabeth Taylor were great friends. They were both from England a d grew up together at the studio schools.

Spoiler : McDowall, Roddy (birth name was Roderick Andrew Anthony Jude McDowall) Born in Herne Hill, London, England 9/17/1928; died 10/3/1998 of cancer at his Studio City, California home after being diagnosed with the disease in 4/1998. Sister is deseased actress Virginia McDowall. McDowall studied elocution at age five, and by age eight was on London stage in Murder In The Family. McDowall made his movie debut in the 1938 version of the play. Moved to America in 1940. Hollywood screen debut in Man Hunt (1941). Last movie was Great Sex (released in 1999).

Spoiler : I've always known that his career was MANY decades long (starting as I child), but for some reason, I had no idea that he had been on the radio.

Spoiler : Terrific actor. The camera loved him. Anyone ever see the very odd "Lord Love a Duck," with him and Tuesday Weld? "Lord love a duck/though nobody cares./So tired of swimming and getting nowhere./Down on my luck-o/stuck in the muck-o/loo-rrrr-ddd love a duck." Yes, I remember the theme song. I had the 45.
