Spoiler : Gordon, Ruth (birth name was Ruth Gordon Jones) Born in Quincy, Massachusetts 10/30/1896; died 8/28/1985 of a stroke in Edgartown, Massachusetts. Married and divorced to actor Gregory Kelly (1921-1927 his death); Garson Kanin (1952-1985 her death). Studied acting at the New York American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Made her Broadway debut in 1915's Peter Pan, then after her silent screen appearances in 1915, she moved to England where she spent twenty years at the Old Vic. Screen debut with an extra role in 1915's The Whirl of Life, then played Mary Todd Lincoln in Abe Lincoln in Illinois (1940). Last movie was playing the sheriff in Voyage of the Rock Aliens which was released in 1988. Gordon and her husband, Kanin collaborated on four screenplays including 1949's Adam's Rib and 1952's Pat and Mike.

Writer for television including episodes of The Prudential Family Playhouse on CBS (1956-1960); The Alcoa Hour (Alcoa Theatre) on NBC (1955-1960); The DuPont Show of the Month on CBS (1957-1961); Adam's Rib on ABC (1973). Emmy Award in 1979 for playing Dee Wilcox in an episodes of Taxi titled Sugar Mama that was telecast on January 16, 1979.

Spoiler : Ruth Gordon (1896 ~ 1985) Gordon appeared in classic films of the 1940s, such as "Abe Lincoln In Illinois" (1940), "Dr. Ehrlich's Magic Bullet" (1940), "Edge Of Darkness" (1943), "Action In The North Atlantic" (1943) and even the infamous (and ill-fated) "Two-Faced Woman" (1941) starring Greta Garbo. Yet her biggest fame came later in her career during the 1960s and early 1970s ~ when she won the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for "Rosemary's Baby" (1968) and had her biggest personal hit with 1971's "Harold And Maude". Other films at that time included: "Inside Daisy Clover" (1965 - Oscar nomination), "Lord Love A Duck" (1966), "What Ever Happened To Aunt Alice?" (1969) and "Where's Poppa?" (1970). She kept her career going in films like "Every Which Way But Loose" (1978) and "Any Which Way You Can" (1980) both starring Clint Eastwood, along with "Boardwalk" (1979), "My Bodyguard" (1980) and "Maxie" (1985), among others. Ruth and husband Garson Kanin were a popular screenwriting team ~ receiving Oscar nominations for "A Double Life" (1947), "Adam's Rib" (1949) and "Pat And Mike" (1952). Jean Simmons portrayed Gordon in the autobiographical "The Actress" (1953).

Spoiler : She was not a pre-code movie actress. Other than appearing as an extra in a few silent films, her first film was in Garbo's Two Faced Woman in 1941.
