This poor little guy's whole life was a train wreck! He got into show business after his father died when Scotty was five and he had to support his family from that time for the rest of his life.

Other sources say he commited suicide. Child actor in the Our Gang comedy shorts at age three. One of four actors to play Junior on The Life of Riley for NBC-BLUE and ABC-Radio (1944-1951). Winky on the 1954 syndicated television series, Rocky Jones, Space Rangers.

He brought it on himself? Not entirely. He became the family breadwinner at the age of 4 when his father died. No childhood. Hollywood has a dark side (drugs, predators, etc). While that does not excuse his behavior, it explains it. He also attempted suicide at least twice in the past, in an era when many issues were not discussed openly.
