Very hard to believe that the movie Bright Eyes is 81 years old. Shirley Temple was such a talented little girl and so beloved even to this day. My granddaughter loves to watch her movie's at our house. She will always be a treasure to many.

I'm 68 years old. When I was a little girl, I drank chocolate milk and root beer floats out of that blue glass cup with Shirley's face on it. I liked watching her movies as a child and adult. She was such an intelligent, talented, special child.

She was a natural. She loved performing, wasn't spoiled. Had really good parents who looked out for her best interests. Peter Bogdanovich interviewed Directors in one of his books. I can't remember the Director, but he was assigned to do a Shirley Temple film. He knew that Shirley's movies had saved the studio and made money during the Great Depression. At the beginning of the film, he took Shirley aside and said"Shirley, you're going to have to help me keep everyone on their toes. We can't fall behind schedule or have to reshoot scenes. I'm going to be the Sheriff and I'm making you my deputy.(He had the Prop department make up badges- Sheriff and Deputy Shirley Temple Town.) He pinned on her and swore her in to uphold her duty. She never let him down. She would say things like" Joe, in this next number you have to have the spot follow our tap dance and not slow it down." She had been on so many films and knew so many of the crew and what they did, that she was able to anticipate problems. She would then look at the Director and he would say That's right, Deputy. You follow Shirley, Joe. " One day the Director was late getting to the studio and was stopped by a traffic cop. The director explained he was directing a Shirley Temple film and holding up filming. The cop noticed the Prop badge "Sheriff, Shirley Temple Town". He explained. The cop said his little girl was a big fan. He gave the Director a police escort with siren through traffic and lights to the studio. The director gave him the Sheriff badge and got his address to send his daughter an autographed photo of Shirley. He wasn't late. I loved that story.

Temple was (and still is) the most popular child star who ever graced the silver screen - and during much of the 1930s was the # 1 star at the box office, ahead of all the adult stars. She helped to make the Great Depression bearable for movie-going audiences who could escape their troubles watching this adorable kid on the big screen. Shirley was multi-talented, adept at singing too and especially dancing. Some people (especially in Europe) thought she was actually a midget playing a child. She began her film career at age three in Baby Burlesk shorts and moved on to feature films in 1934, starring in "Stand Up And Cheer!", "Little Miss Marker", "Baby Take A Bow", "Now And Forever" and "Bright Eyes" among other films in that single year - and received a Special Juvenile Academy Award for her efforts (the first award of its kind, given sporadically thereafter). She sang her signature song in "Bright Eyes" - 'On The Good Ship Lollipop' - which became a huge hit. Her other films included: "The Little Colonel" (35), "Curly Top" (35), "The Littlest Rebel" (35), "Captain January" (36), "Poor Little Rich Girl" (36), "Dimples" (36), "Stowaway" (36), "Wee Willie Winkie" (37), "Heidi" (37), "Rebecca Of Sunnybrook Farm" (38), "Little Miss Broadway" (38), "The Little Princess" (39) and "The Blue Bird" (40). Shirley moved on to adult roles in 1940s films, such as: "Miss Annie Rooney" (42), "Since You Went Away" (44), "I'll Be Seeing You" (44), "Honeymoon" (47), "The Bachelor And The Bobby-Soxer" (47), "Fort Apache" (48), "The Story Of Seabiscuit" (49) and "A Kiss For Corliss" (49). Temple retired from films after 1949 and went into politics later on - and one of her appointments was to be the US Ambassador to Ghana in the 1970s. She received several late life awards, including the Kennedy Center Honors and the Screen Actor's Guild Lifetime Achievement Award. There has been a ton of merchandise for sale with Temple's image and she continues to be an inspiration for children and adults alike for new generations. Shirley passed in 2014 at age 85.

Shirley Temple (1928 ~ 2014) was perhaps THE most popular musical entertainer of classic cinema ~ at least in terms of being beloved by the public and at the box office (as she typically came in at # 1 during the height of her fame during the 1930s). Shirley was a definite "triple threat" - equally adept at acting, singing and dancing. (Some people actually thought she was a midget, because they thought no child could be that talented).

All of her childhood films included song and dance numbers and who can forget that staircase dance number she did with Bill 'Bojangles' Robinson in the classic "The Little Colonel" (1935)? She won the first Juvenile Academy Award for her work in films during 1934 (a whopping ten appearances) and one of her hit songs included 'On The Good Ship Lollipop' from "Bright Eyes" (1934).
