Spoiler :
Freberg, Stan (birth name was Stanley Victor Freberg)
Born in Pasadena, California 8/7/1926. Provided animal sounds for Black Beauty on CBS-Radio (1947). Record comedian (St. George And The Dragonet 1953; Little Red Riding Hood). Provided
voices for Walt Disney, and UPA cartoons. Freberg helped develope the television puppet series, Time For Beany on KTLA (1949-1954). Richard E. Wilk on That's Rich for CBS-Radio (1954). Star of The Stan Freberg Show on CBS-Radio (1957). Regular performer on The Chevy Show for NBC-TV in 1958. Guest director for Amazing Stories on NBC-TV (1985-1987).
Spoiler :
I remember the first show. It was a summer replacement for Jack Benny (whose
show was in reruns on radio, but he was still replaced for the summer by
Stan Freberg). An LP album (two records, I think) came out of routines
from the show, and they were very good. Unfortunately, Freberg never
seemed to click as a television performer.
The show's quick demise probably had more to do with Freberg's
constantly challenging the taboos of broadcasting, as they existed at
that time. He also never managed to attract a sponsor, and he refused
to accept an alcohol or tobacco company. It seems ironic that he later
met great success creating commercials.
Spoiler :
Love Stan Freberg! I have been looking everywhere for one of his sketches... In "The Christmas Song," Freberg parodies the music industry by portraying a singer trying to perform a sincere Christmas song. However, the producer repeatedly interrupts, insisting on adding over-the-top commercial elements, like jingles for various products, to make the song more "marketable." At one point, in the height of absurdity, the producer throws in the line "got your goat in Allentown" as a way of making the song more relatable—or perhaps just more ridiculous. I have not heard it in 40 years! Driving my wife insane while I try and find it.
