Hayward (1917 – 1975) was an American actress and model. After working as a fashion model, Hayward traveled to Hollywood in 1937. She secured a film contract and played several small supporting roles over the next few years.

When she was seven she was hit by a car and suffered a fractured hip. Doctors told her she might never walk again. However, after six months, she was able to get around on crutches and after a year was able to return to school. The injury left her with one leg that was 1-1/2 inches shorter than the other, and she had to wear a lift in her shoe. Classmates made fun of her odd way of walking, but it became a trademark strut for her in Hollywood.

Hayward tried to secure the role of Scarlett O'Hara in the successful film Gone with the Wind. Although Hayward did not win the role, she found a contract at Warner Bros. Hayward's first sizeable role was in a "B" with Ronald Reagan, Girls on Probation (1938). She was also in Comet Over Broadway (1938).

By the late 1940s, the quality of her film roles had improved, and she achieved recognition for her dramatic abilities with the first of five Academy Award nominations for Best Actress for her performance as an alcoholic in Smash-Up, the Story of a Woman (1947). Her career continued successfully through the 1950s and she received subsequent nominations for My Foolish Heart (1949), With a Song in My Heart (1952), and I'll Cry Tomorrow (1955). She finally won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of death row inmate Barbara Graham in I Want to Live! (1958).

Born in 1917, Susan began working as a photographer's model while still in high school, and when open auditions were held in 1937 for the role of Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With the Wind, she arrived in Hollywood with scores of other actresses. Unlike most of the others, however, she managed to become a contract player. Her roles were initially discouragingly small, although she gradually work her way up to stardom.

Hayward was diagnosed with brain cancer, allegedly the result of being exposed to dangerous radioactive toxins on location in Utah while making The Conqueror (1956). All the leads John Wayne, Agnes Moorehead, John Hoyt, Pedro Armendáriz, Hayward and director Dick Powell died of cancer. The case is still a scandal.
