Theda Bara was an American silent film and stage actress. Bara was one of the most popular actresses of the silent era, and one of cinema's earliest sex symbols. Her femme fatale roles earned her the nickname The Vamp (short for vampire). Bara made more than 40 films between 1914 and 1926, but most were lost in the 1937 Fox vault fire. After her marriage to Charles Brabin in 1921, she made two more feature films and then retired from acting in 1926, having never appeared in a sound film.

One of the funniest Bara stories comes from the height of her popularity. She was being interviewed in a hotel room with all of the trappings of a self-respecting Vampire: animal hides, lit candles, low lighting and LOTS of incense burning. As soon as the reporters had left, Bara leapt up coughing. "For God's sake, somebody open a window", she coughed in her best Theodosia Goodman style(her real name). She was a down-to-earth girl weighted down with this exotic image.
