She came to America with her family in the middle 1920s, settling n Madison, Wisconsin. Married and divorced from actor Jose Ferrer (1938-1948); actor Herbert Berghof (1957-1990 his death). Studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London. Screen debut playing Ada in The Other (1972). Last movie was narrating Limon: A Life Beyond Words (2001).

Spoiler : A noted stage actress that did limited work as a television actress from 1950 to the late 1990s. 1950 Tony Award for The Country Girl; 1962 Tony Award for playing Martha in the Broadway production of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf. From 1957, she and husband Berghof founded and taught at the Herbert Berghof Studio in Greenwich Village, New York. Following the death of her husband, she became chairwoman of HB Studios and the theater of the HB Playwrights Foundation. She received the Women's International Center (WIC) Living Legacy Award in 1994. Received the American National Medal of Arts presented by President George Bush in March of 2003.
