Very funny show.

I remember enjoying his character on "The Life of Riley" and "Wake Island". The latter still shows up on one or the other channels. Sometimes, it just good to sit back and enjoy the "black and whites"!

I love listening to Life of Riley. My dad's best friend was the undertaker in our small town. Behind his back, Dad used to refer to him as "Digger O'Dell." Now, I understand why. Our "Digger" loved old radio and introduced me to many programs. He had hours and hours of shows on cassette tapes that I inherited when he passed away. He would have loved Radio Classics, but he would have wanted Greg Bell's job!

William Bendix Born New York, New York, January 14, 1906 Died Los Angeles, California, December 14, 1964 Age 58 (lobar pneumonia) What a fantastic life this man had! As a teenager he was a bat boy for the New York Yankees, but he lost his job when Babe Ruth asked him for a hot dog and a Coke during a game and he didn't bring them to him. Before the Depression, he worked in chain grocery management. But in 1936, he became a stage actor by way of a WPA project. This led to his motion picture career. On radio we loved him as Chester A. Riley, Sr.

Happy birthday, William Bendix! Bendix was best known for playing blue collar characters, like Chester A Riley, during his career. Producer Irving Brecher chose him specifically to star in the role in The Life of Riley.

The Depression killed his grocery store business, and he only lasted one night as singing waiter. Tried acting and became a star with his role of Krupp in the 1939 Broadway play, Time of Your Life. Screen debut in Brooklyn Orchid (1942). Last movie was Young Fury that was released in 1965. Chester A. Riley on The Life Of Riley for NBC-Radio (1944-1951) and NBC-TV (1953- 1958). Frederick Thomas Kelly on The Overland Trail for NBC-TV (1960). Bendix played his last television role as a guest on Burke's Law for ABC (9/30/1964).
