Holden, William (William Franklin Beedle, Jr.) Born in O'Fallon, Illinois 4/17/1918; died 11/10/1981 of blood loss from an injury suffered in a fall at his Santa Monica, California home. Married and divorced to actress Brenda Marshall (1942-1971). Educated at the Pasadena Junior College (1937), then signed a contract with Paramont Pictures that same year. On screen in Golden Boy (1939). Served in the Army Air Corp (1942- 1946). Academy Award for Stalag 17 (1953). Last movie was S.O.B (1981). Guest star on radio programs including at least 15 times on Lux Radio Theater for CBS (1940-1953); The Hour Of Mystery for ABC (1946). Bill Smith on the WOR- New York transcribed syndicated radio program, The Smiths Of Hollywood (1947). Bumper Morgan on the 1973 NBC-TV miniseries, The Blue Knight based on Joseph Wambaugh's best-selling novel. Emmy Award in 1974 for The Blue Knight.

Huge fan of Holden and I loved his films, but unfortunately, his drinking and depression stemmed from the fact that he had two brothers who were very successful businessmen and he did not believe that he measured up to their success. He also had this notion that being an actor was not a very manly profession. I've read that Marlon Brando shared this same sentiment with regard to his chosen vocation.

William Holden was my introduction to classic movies. I was working at a West Coast Video in the mid 90s. Up until that point The only classic anything I cared about was television. Specifically Hogan's Heroes. I had heard at some point that H.H. was based off of a movie called Stalag 17. So I rented it, took it home and was super disappointed when I realized this movie was not a comedy like Hogan's. But I finished it and went to work the next day looking for more of Holden's films as well as other classic films. Happy birthday, Bill. Thanks for getting hooked on classic films.
