Sherry's father was dead, and her mother, who was ill and penniless in the charity ward of a Seattle hospital, had sent the little girl north to the Yukon to live with her grandfather, old Amos Benbo. Amos was a notorious hermit who owned a small mining claim about twenty miles east of White Horse. Sgt Preston doubted very much that the crocheted old man would welcome the job of caring for his small granddaughter.... |
