He was old, harmless, and as simple as a child. The only thing that mattered to Bill was his old dog, Barnaby, who followed him about in the Silver Dollar cafe, where Bill swept the floor and cleaned the cuspidors in exchange for his board and room. Bill had been successful once, but they said he had gotten himself lost in the Yukon blizzard, and after that, his mind went blank. Barnaby had saved him and brought him home. But that was long ago, when Barnaby was young and strong. Now, he was happy to doze beside the stove on an evening... |
