The Challenge of the Yukon was a long-running adventure show that aired from February 3, 1938 to June 9, 1955. It featured Paul Sutton as Sergeant William Preston, the show’s main character, along with the “Yukon King,” his sidekick. The story was about how Preston and his sidekick fought the evildoers during the period of the Gold Rush in the 1890s. Preston’s initial goal was to capture the killer of his father. After doing so, he started to work for Inspector Conrad, with the assistance of Pierre, his French-Canadian guide.

Throughout its run, the show was heard over different networks, starting from Detroit’s WXYZ, then to ABC from 1947 to 1949, and finally on Mutual from 1950 until the last episode on 1955. The show later had its TV adaptation. Click here to read more about Challenge Of The Yukon (Sgt Preston)

Sergeant Preston was played by Paul Sutton first, then Brace Beemer the last year. Announced by Fred Foy then Jay Michael, then Fred Foy returned the last year. The character was created by George W. Trendle. Directed by Fred Flowerday. Produced by Charles D. Livingstone for Trendle Enterprises. The program was broadcast from June 12, 1947 on ABC network and was titled "Challenge of the Yukon." By 1953 the title had become the hero's name. It was a sustained show from 1947 until 1948 when Quaker Oats started paying the bills for a three times-a-week 30 minute format. In 1950 it moved to Mutual until it left the air in 1955. The program became a popular television show in the early to the mid 1950s, and was one of the first TV programs filmed in color (check out our complete TV series in our OTV DVD catalog).
