Spoiler : Remember, in the mid-Seventies (I think it was 1975), when you could send off to Kellogg's for one (of four) LPs of vintage Superman radio shows? I got Volume 1, thinking (in all my junior high wisdom) that it would be Superman's origin story...not knowing, at the time, the radio show didn't really do an origin story. Never got the other three, recently spotted one in a second-hand shop, but didn't grab it. Went back later, and it was gone.

This comic book character was created in 1938 by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, and the character has been featured in comics, movies, and on radio and TV since. It was broadcast on radio as a syndicated WOR-New York series (1940-1942); full Mutual network (1942-1949); full ABC network (1949-1951). The series was always broadcast as a 15-minute program except for the January 31 to June 17, 1951 Mutual series, which was a 30-minute program.

Spoiler : The Adventures of Superman was a long-running radio serial that originally aired from 1940 to 1951, adapted from the DC Comics character. The serial came to radio as a syndicated show on New York City's WOR on February 12, 1940. On Mutual, it was broadcast from August 31, 1942, to February 4, 1949, as a 15-minute serial, running three or, usually, five times a week. From February 7 to June 24, 1949 it ran as a thrice-weekly half-hour show. The series shifted to ABC Saturday evenings on October 29, 1949, and then returned to afternoons, twice-a-week on June 5, 1950, continuing on ABC until March 1, 1951. In all, 2068 original episodes of The Adventures of Superman were aired on American radio. Created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, the Man of Steel first appeared in Action Comics #1 in 1938. The following year, the newspaper comic strip began and four audition radio programs were prepared to sell Superman as a radio series. When Superman was first heard on radio less than two years after the comic book appearance, the character took on an added dimension with Bud Collyer in the title role. During World War II and the post-war years, the juvenile adventure radio serial, sponsored by Kellogg's Pep, was a huge success, with many listeners following the quest for "truth and justice" in the daily radio broadcasts, the comic book stories and the newspaper comic strip. Airing in the late afternoon (variously at 5:15pm, 5:30pm and 5:45pm), the radio serial engaged its young after-school audience with its exciting and distinctive opening, which changed slightly as the series progressed. Most familiar today is the television opening, which copied the radio opening from 1945 onward (save for "and the American Way" line, which was an even later addition) but the most-oft-heard radio opening through the mid-1940s was: "Presenting the transcription feature, Superman." (followed by Superman's "flying" audio effect) Up in the sky! Look! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Superman! "Yes, it's Superman--strange visitor from the planet Krypton who came to Earth with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men. Superman, who can leap tall buildings in a single bound, race a speeding bullet to its target, bend steel in his bare hands, and who, disguised as Clark Kent, mild-mannered reporter for a great Metropolitan newspaper, fights a never-ending battle for truth and justice." By September 5, 1945, the opening, (repeated at the close), had morphed into: "Faster than a speeding bullet. More powerful than a locomotive. Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound.' Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Superman!" The syndicated series, titled simply Superman, first aired via pre-recorded transcription disks over 11 stations beginning on February 12, 1940, with an origin story, "The Baby from Krypton". The series aired in 15-minute episodes three times a week until May 9, 1941, with the conclusion of the "Nitrate Shipment" storyline. By that time, it had expanded to 63 stations. The series left MBS with the 60th half-hour show, "The Mystery of the Frozen Monster," on June 24, 1949. It returned as a mystery program targeted toward adults on Saturday, October 29, 1949 at 8:30pm over the ABC network. ABC aired this adult-themed version for 13 weeks, concluding with "Dead Men Tell No Tales" on January 21, 1950. This broadcast marked the final radio appearance of Bud Collyer as Clark Kent/Superman. On June 5, 1950, ABC revived The Adventures of Superman as a twice-weekly afternoon half-hour series. This version reused the scripts for the 60 MBS half-hour episodes and the 13 "adult" ABC episodes but with new cast members. Michael Fitzmaurice replaced Collyer as Kent/Superman, Jack Grimes replaced Jackie Kelk as Jimmy Olsen, and Ross Martin replaced Jackson Beck as narrator. A total of 78 episodes were produced, with the final broadcast, "The Mystery of the Prehistoric Monster," on March 1, 1951. By then, producer Robert Maxwell was actively preparing Adventures of Superman for television.

Then there were others where they randomly discussed stuff pertaining to his other identity with people present. They were WAY more careful with Clark's

Spoiler : The Adventures of Superman', 'The most famous superhero of them all is a household name throughout the world, but when this show appeared, the legend was still being formed and this radio show helped form it. In 1933 or 1934 (the dates are difficult to pinpoint and are quoted differently by different sources) Jerry Siegel went to his friend, cartoonist Joe Shuster, with the idea of a super-strongman character by the name of Superman. While it is easy to see now, with so many superhero characters filling the newstands and comic shops that this was a saleable idea, it was very difficult to sell in the 30s, so the idea sat in a desk drawer, with Siegel and Shuster creating characters like Slam Bradley and Dr. Occult before their most well-known character became accepted by a fledgling comic company, DC Comics. In the first issue of Action Comics (published in June, 1938), the character was finally shown and was an instant hit, selling out a half-million copies per issue by its seventh issue. Superman was given his own magazine and sold well over a million issues per month. Of course, this Superman was far different than the modern version we are used to. He was extremely strong, could leap for 1/8th of a mile (or over a tall building in a single bound), and "nothing less than a bursting shell could pierce his skin. He was able to see through objects and had highly acute hearing, but that was the limits of his powers at that time. This suddenly popular character that was focused in two comic books and a syndicated newspaper strip was now ripe for radio. After getting George Ludlam on board to write most of the series, DC Comics did auditions and worked on getting sponsors. While many characters played throughout the series, the most notable pick was Clayton "Bud" Collyer, a former attorney who turned toward acting on the radio, most notably in Terry and the Pirates. His ability to create and switch between two separate voices (the tenor of Clark Kent and the bass of Superman), meant that he was the best man for the job. Collyer was uneasy about taking the role, fearing that it would hurt his reputation as an actor, but he needn't have worried. He eventually came to cherish this role which is, perhaps, the one he is best known for. The show itself was groundbreaking in many ways, developing all sorts of sound effects (such as a mix of sounds that included a Spanish War bomb dropping, a 50-mile gale, and a wind machine to make Superman's distinctive flying sound) and important parts of the Superman legend such as the characters of Perry White and Jimmy Olsen, kryptonite, and the first team-ups of Superman and Batman. His workplace became "The Daily Planet" which was a change of the comics "Daily Star" and Metropolis became populated with characters like Inspector Henderson, Beanie Martin, Candy Meyers, and Mary Hennig. Villains like the Scarlet Widow and the Atom Man went beyond the radio show to appear on-screen in two Kirk Allyn movie serials. That's right, the radio show (and not the comic) became the source material for these films. Perhaps the biggest addition that the radio shows writer's made was the ability of flight. As stated, Superman (in the comics) could only make leaps from place to place, but the radio show gave him the ability to sustain himself in midair. (This adaptation was quickly adopted by the comic book.) However, aside from flight, the character remained much the same as the original concept in the first comic books. There was no heat vision, no super-cold breath, no "super-hypnotism" (which actually appeared in a few comic books when one of Superman's friends was about to discover his secret identity), or other odd powers. The radio version of Superman was strong, could fly, was completely invulnerable, and had highly acute vision and hearing (including x-ray vision and the ability to see in the dark). Still, the biggest hero of most of the stories was Clark Kent. He would be the one ferreting out clues in each story and using his Superman abilities only to get around quickly or to make a climactic save at the end. Most of the time, it was Clark that solved the case and Superman that got all of the credit. The show was ground-breaking in other ways. In 1946, Superman tackled hate-mongering organizations, most notably in the "Klan of the Fiery Cross" where he fought an organization that was very similar to the Ku Klux Klan in its style and tactics. There were a lot of worries over these shows, especially in the South where it could hurt business for Kelloggs (the sponsor of the show) and the Mutual Network which aired the show. Again, there was no need to worry. Superman was the first juvenile-based radio show that dealt with such relevant issues and it was well received and recognized for its efforts.
