Amos and Andy was the brainchild of talented writers' and artists' Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll. This brilliant duo both wrote and portrayed the voices of the show's protagonists on this old time radio series. The anthology gathered a wide and massive listenership throughout America, and is in a fact one of the longest running serials in the history of the golden age of radio. As far as comedies went, Amos and Andy was an icon of it's time with over 34-years of airtime. The first of these old radio shows were ran during the early 1930's and showered joy into the average American household. They would later expand their audience to an estimated 40 million listeners across the nation. The show would go on to have an outstanding run and tickle everyone's funny bone until the 1950's. During this time, Amos and Andy's popularity had already started it's decline which many attributed to the television adaptation of the old time radio program wherein White actors portrayed Black characters. I used to hear how racist the show was, and then I heard some episodes. In spite of some stereotypical accents, I found the characters to be more than two dimensional caricatures. The Christmas episode, redone for television, remains one of the loveliest episodes of any program I know of. This was a wonderful show, I was about 10 or 11, as a kid I just thought it was funny. On the radio the characters were played by white guys, but theses guys were the best.

I grew up listening to AnA with Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll portraying the title roles. I was brought up in the Jim Crow south by an enlightened northern father who taught my brother and me that racial discrimination was an abomination. I never thought of AnA as racist. I thought of it in much the same terms as in later years I thought of the antics of Ralph Cramden and Ed Norton. When AnA came to tv with black actors in the cast I enjoyed it nearly as much as I had the original radio series. Some years ago, however, I came upon a movie produced in 1930 with Gosden and Correll performing their famous characters in blackface. I was astonished by the blatant racist themes in the movie. I have seen Gosden quoted as saying Check and Double Check "just about the worst movie ever." For a full examination of the various aspects ot Amos and Andy I would recommend the works of Elizabeth McLeod.

I've listened to a few episodes of AnA; frankly, I think later sitcoms like The Jeffersons stole a lot of their humor. If Gosden and Correll had been of color, AnA could have been as iconic as The Jack Benny Show

Just like Stepin Fetchit and Amos n Andy were extremely funny, but they were the only representations of black of people and that became inherently offensive. If AnA were portrayed by blacks it still would never had been as popular as Jack Benny and Rochester who was treated as a real person and not the village idiot.

That was so popular. Listened to it for years. The downtown movie theaters would sometimes broadcast the program before starting the evening movie because people wouldn't want to miss it. A few of the stores open at night would also broadcast the program so shoppers or even those walking down past the stores would hear it.

The show also used stereotypical black characters as leads. It went to TV in the 1950s. The show is considered so racist that it hasn't been seen on TV since it went off the air. Several years ago, someone tried to sell home video copies of the complete series. The copyright holder shut it down. I don't expect it to be seen again until the copyright expires mid-century.
