Spoiler : I agree,the prose is quite poetic.I never tire of hearing Larry Thor's voice. And I love the character Tartaglia.Though I doubt that is how it should be spelled.

Larry Thor is Detective Danny Clover, with Charles Calvert as Sgt Gino Tartaglia and Jack Kruschen as Detective Muggavan, and terrific scripts by the writing team of Morton Fine and David Friedkin, produced and directed by Elliott Lewis. From CBS Feb 14, 1953 “The Artie Blanchard Case”. A man is found dead with his pockets stuffed with money. With Tony Barrett, Bob Sweeney, Benny Rubin, Barbara Eiler, Louise Louis, George Peroni, and James McCallion. Announcer Bill Anders. Today is also the birthday (b. 1921) of award-winning writer E Jack Neuman, who mostly did work on detective, crime, and mystery shows, but also adapted books to radio and wrote biographies for THE HALLMARK HALL OF FAME. According to his obit in the LA Times, he worked his way through law school writing for radio. His work appeared often on such series as SUSPENSE, YOURS TRULY JOHNNY DOLLAR, THE LINE-UP, ESCAPE, JEFF REGAN, and ROCKY JORDAN, and he was often paired with fellow writer John Michael Hayes. He left radio to write TV shows like Mr Novak and Dr Kildare. Today we'll hear his script for the last surviving episode of THE ADVENTURES OF SAM SPADE to feature Howard Duff in the lead “The Farmer's Daughter Caper” from Sept 03, 1950.

Spoiler : Maybe this is just too obvious to mention, but I've been really struck lately by the difference in acting styles between shows made in the 1930s-40s and those made in the 1950s -- between, say, Broadway is my Beat and the mid-1950s incarnation of Yours Truly Johnny Dollar. Not that the actors in all shows made at the same time sound the same, but just that there seems to be a shift to a more naturalistic, intimate, less histrionic style, similar to what you see in movie acting. It's not Method voice acting, exactly, it just seems less theatrical; the older shows tend to sound much stagier to me, and while they can be very entertaining, I don't find them as engrossing. This reminds me of how singers like Crosby and Sinatra learned to adapt the new microphone technology to create a more intimate style of singing. Many of these later radio actors, too, seem to me to have learned a more intimate, conversational style of line-reading. I'm constantly amazed, for instance, at what skilled pros Bob Bailey and his cohorts are on YTJD, or the cast of Gunsmoke. The perfection of their timing and the little naturalistic touches are striking in a way that I don't think would have been common in an earlier decade. Anyhow, just some random thoughts...

Spoiler : Featuring this crime drama featuring Detective Danny Glover whose New York Police Department beat is on Times Square. About the best NYPD radio crime dramas series ever aired. It was broadcast on CBS from 1949 to 1954.

Spoiler : I come back to this show again and again, the lush style, the expansive and alliterative descriptions of life on Broadway are enveloping. When Detective Clover shifts over to the crime and the place it feels like being taken behind the scenes, where tourists are never allowed, to see life and death in the big city. The big city filled with people like you've never met before and could only meet because you are tagging along with Danny on his beat. Broadway, the loneliest mile in the world.

Spoiler : Was Clover a detective or detective lieutenant? Seems I heard him being addressed as lieutenant on a couple of occasions. Big difference between the two in the NYPD.
