She explains to George Valentine that the wife (her best friend) has a heart condition and the shock would most certainly kill her. So Valentine pretends to be the man that has supplanted the husband in his client’s affections but then there's a thinly veiled threat from the husband he won't hesitate to kill Valentine if he stands in his way...
