Richard Diamond, Private Detective was a happy-go-lucky detective who answered his telephone with atrocious commercial jingles and was a master of the verbal putdown (especially with the police).

The opening each week set up the problem and propelled the sarcasm with the cops; the ending usually found Dick Powell as Richard Diamond in the Park Avenue penthouse of his girlfriend, the rich redhead Helen Asher.

Diamond is a slick, sophisticated detective, with a sharp tongue for folks who need it. Diamond enjoyed the detective life, but not as much as entertaining his girl, Helen Asher. After each show, he would croon a number to his Park Avenue sweetheart. Helen Asher was portrayed by Virginia Gregg, who also played the part of Brooksie on "Let George Do It" and Betty Lewis on "Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar". Blake Edwards wrote the early shows and also directed a few. Music was composed by David Baskerville and later by Frank Wirth. The program began on NBC in 1949, then in May of 1953, the series moved to CBS but all shows were repeats from the 1950-51 season. There was also a television series, which starred David Janssen that was telecast by CBS and NBC from 1957 to 1960.

RICHARD DIAMOND, PRIVATE DETECTIVE(NEW FOR 2009)

There are a bunch of inside jokes throughout the run, and the humor sets it apart from the other shows in this genre. It started out as an easy pass, then to my favorite!!

Is anyone aware of or know the whereabouts of the 50 to 60 Richard Diamond radio episodes that, as far as I can tell, are still missing? I found the transcripts of the episodes online, coming from some boxes in a warehouse (believe it was R J Reynolds) but have never found any of the recordings. Randy S

Probably my second favorite private eye show next to the Falcon. Sharp sense of humor, great chemistry with the main cast and willingness to do some real "outside the box" plots keeps it fresh and avoids repetitive "thieves steal" "someone kills someone" plots. Only negative I would say is the shows quality really takes a tumble after Camel begins sponsoring it. But then again, name me 1 t.v or radio show that was high quality throughout it's run. The early episodes with Walt and Ortis(sorry if I spelled his name wrong) being Diamond's comedic foils were better than the later ones that seems like they were trying to copy the Falcon/Corbett relationship. But those are just minor problems. It's a really good show.
