After the success of Mercury Playhouse, Campbell’s Playhouse and several other projects, Orson Welles became fascinated with the idea of producing and hosting a radio variety program. He got a taste for the genre when the great Jack Benny came down with pneumonia during a tour of military bases and Welles was tapped as the guest host. Orson Welles Almanac was his great chance to shine in variety, but because he was so notoriously hard to work with, sponsor Mobil Oil dropped the project after just a few episodes.
