The New England town hall meeting was one of the earliest experiments in democracy on the North American continent, an opportunity for neighbors to come together to be informed and discuss issues which affected the community as a whole. From 1935 to 1956, America’s Town Meeting of the Air tried to bring this concept to a modern, nationwide forum. Produced by the League for Political Education and featuring executive director George V. Denny Jr, the program became incredibly popular, even inspiring listener clubs who would listen and explore the issues further after the actual broadcast.
