The story begins in France, with a poor artist who is painting the most wonderful merry-go-round. His dream is to capture a melody on canvas - so that when people look at a picture of his, they can hear a little song. Right now though, things aren't going so well. He's hopelessly in love with Lorraine, but knows that he cannot give her all of the things that she wants. So, on her birthday, he purloins the earrings he knows that she has her heart set on...
