Lux Radio Theater started as a Sunday afternoon anthology featuring radio versions of Broadway plays. Lux Radio Theater soon struck gold with the addition of Cecil B. DeMille as host when the show began re-creating popular Hollywood films.

Listen to stars such as Fred MacMurray, Loretta Young, Cary Grant, Clark Gable, and Claudette Colbert perform in front of a weekly studio audience of 1,000 fans on one of Old Time Radio’s most expensive and longest running programs, Lux Radio Theater.

As an offshoot to this topic, it amazes me that where there were thousands of Old time Radio parts to play, except for the obvious stars of the shows, the same few actors seemed to be in every show episode. Harry Bartell, Virginia Gregg, John Dehner, Larry Dobkin, William Conrad, Wally Maher, Howard McNear and a number of others..You could count on one of these actors being in most any show episode. A testament to their talent and professionalism.

Everett Sloan. John McIntire. Tom Tully. John Stevenson. Teddy Bergman (Alan Reed), Santos Ortega, Frank Readick, Larry Thor, Sam Edwards, Herb Vigran...like Frank Lovejoy, all on radio long before TV and the movies.

His name isn't widely remembered but his voice is unforgettable: a Lux Theater show today reminded me how delighted I was to find Arthur Q. Bryan all over the OTR.

One of my favorite Lux Radio Theater stories is when DeMille exclaimed, "Who the hell is John Milton Kennedy?" - not realising that John was the announcer.

Lux Radio Theater also did a couple of versions of the classic film "Miracle on 34th Street" with some of the original cast members Edmund Gwenn, Maureen O'Hara, John Payne and Natalie Wood. They also did "It's a Wonderful Life" with Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed. Jimmy Stewart also did two other versions of "It's a Wonderful Life" on radio. Those are fun to listen to this time of year.

The Lux Radio Theatre presented Hollywood stars playing their original roles in current movies, complete with orchestra, and a live studio audience. Sometimes the original stars couldn't appear, but when they did, they were paid $5,000, which by today's standards is not much, but then that was a very large chunk of cash. The series was hosted by Hollywood mogul Cecil B Demille from 1934 to 1945, then William Keighley (1945-1952), Irving Cumming (1952-1955), and during the 1953 summer season, Ken Carpenter and Don Wilson were the guest hosts. It was broadcast by NBC from 1934 to 1955, always sponsored by Lever Bros for Lux Soap.
