Parents lined the rails, basking in the warm sunshine. Children scampered along the bright decks, squealing gleefully at their release from the city's streets. There was laughter in the air and snatches of songs. On June 15th 1904, the excursion boat General Sloakam, passing through Hell Gate on the east river, burned and sank with the loss of a thousand lives… |
