Spoiler : Contains all of the existing episodes of this series that NBC broadcast as the 1950 summer replacement for Fibber McGee and Molly. Charles Boyer plays the same romantic French rogue in this series that made him one of the most glamorous film stars of the 1930s and 1940s. The program opens with lively French music being played by a street accordionist while a young woman sings. Michel walks out of the early evening, his footsteps coming close, "Bonsoir my dear," he says in passing, "Bonsoir Michel," she replied wistfully. One week might find Michel impersonating a general in the French Foreign Legion, the next week he will take on the cause of a young artist whose work is destined to hang in the Louvre. At the end of each program, there is a tease of what is to come next week, and when Conway demands the rest, Michel laughs and says, "Ah, but that is another story - and another $200." Charles Boyer plays Michel. Hanley Stafford plays Bart Conway, later Herb Butterfield takes over the role. Spoiler : Regarding Boyer's work on the radio, a trade publication from 1940 reported: “It is an open secret that he doesn’t like the present policy of a different story and characters each week. Boyer would prefer a program in which he could develop a permanent characterization.” Charles Boyer would get his wish with "Presenting Charles Boyer", a series that premiered in the summer of 1950 as a replacement for Fibber McGee & Molly. It would have a short run -- exiting the airwaves in October that same year. In the show, Boyer played a charming rogue named Michel who, according to announcer Don Stanley, “belongs to that royal line of adventurers whose titles are stitched on the fabric of their own imaginations, but who’d willingly give up any title for a moment of romance or a spot of cash.” By this point in his career, Charles was starting to gravitate more toward character roles and did so quite successfully with movies like The 13th Letter (1951), The First Legion (1951), The Happy Time (1952), and The Earrings of Madame De (1953). According to the Encyclopedia of Old Time Radio: "Charles Boyer was right in character in this light-hearted dramatic series, playing the same romantic French rogue that made him one of the most glamorous film stars of the '30s and '40s...The show opened with lively French music being played by a street accordionist while a young woman sings. In the cafe, Michel meets his friend, writer Bart Conway. He always arrives broke, and Conway is always in need of a story. The story Michel tells him becomes the tale of the week. At $200 each, the tales are a bargain, as Conway sells them at big rates to slick American magazines. One week might find Michel impersonating a general in the French Foreign Legion; the next week he will take on the cause of a young artist whose work is destined to hang in the Louvre. Michel is a con man with a world of chutzpah. He impersonates an art connoisseur; then, when unmasked, pretends to be a policeman and bluffs his way out. He teases next week's tale and when Conway demands the rest, Michel laughs and says, "Ah, but that is another story -- and another $200."
