It is 1874 in New York City and in a small shabby tenement room beside a woman’s be kneels Mrs Etta Wheeler a voluntary missionary. The lady wanted no help for herself from Mrs Wheeler but asked her if she could help the child been beaten by her father in the next apartment. At that time it was the law of land that no one could come between a father and his child so there was nothing according to law that Mrs Wheeler could do. Unprepared to stand by and see a child suffer Mrs Wheeler sought the help of a lawyer known for his help in caring for maltreated animals. This story and the second story both show Americas concerns for its boys and girls especially on this day, Christmas day, a day more than nay other day that belongs to children. |
