Democracy in America was based on the travels and observations that writer Alexis de Toqueville set down in his book by the same name. While Toqueville was originally tasked to study the judiciary and penal systems of the United States by the French government, he soon became enamored by all facets of American living. In fact, his keen observation and insight into the American psyche soon propelled his book into the academic field and reading it became a requirement in the educational systems of both America and France.
