Title | : | father coughlin (x) announcements no father coughlin |
Air Date | : | 02.04.1940 |
Plot | : | + Father Coughlin network, WHBI, Newark, New Jersey aircheck. An unusual program from The Shrine Of The Little Flower, Royal Oak, Michigan. Announcer Franklin Mitchell starts the program by saying that he has an important twenty-five word announcement. But instead of reading the announcement, five minutes of music by The Little Flower Choristers follows. Mr. Mitchell then says that, "Father Coughlin will not address you personally today over this microphone. I am not authorized to give any explanation." After another interlude of music, Mr. Mitchell cautions, "Pay no heed to idle rumors which will be circulated this week. Father Coughlin knows what he is doing. He knows why neither he nor any other person is speaking over this microphone today. Probably events transpiring this week will enlighten you." A third announcement follows another interlude of sacred music. Mr. Mitchell says, "A warning! Be advised that Father Coughlin will not enlarge upon the announcements made today. He will not give out any information disclosing the contents of next Sunday's broadcast." During the following broadcast, no mention is made of these announcements. Apparently Father Coughlin had been preparing a sermon considered anti-Semitic by Detroit Archibishop Mooney, who caused the speech to be canceled. |
