Quiz Kids, the kids’ version of Information Please, was a popular juvenile radio-TV quiz show that went on-air during the 1940s and 1950s. Conceptualized by Chicago public relation officer Louis G. Cowan, NBC aired this show on June 28, 1940 as a replacement for Alec Templeton Time. Bald Joe Kelly became the show’s quiz master, while Eliza Hickok and Rachel Stevenson were the researchers, gathering questions that will be asked by the quizmaster to the contestants. The contestants consisted of five wonderful kids who were qualified on the basis of their academic interests, intelligence, and personality. Every week, only the top three scorers would remain in the show and the other two will be replaced. Should a remaining contestant turn 16, he or she will not be allowed to participate anymore. Winning contestants were awarded with $100 savings.

When the show was aired again from January 12, 1956 to September 27, 1956, Clifton Fadiman served as the quizmaster. Quiz Kids was heard on the radio for 13 years. Interesting. I was involved in Star Trek fandom for a number of years (yeah, I know...) and never knew about Harve being a Quiz Kid. I'll have to see if I can find some of those episodes.

I've become a huge fan of The Quiz Kids show. I came across an episode last week during which a question was asked that I don't think was a very good or fair one. The kids were asked "what animal always has the new look?" A few of the kids raised their hands and guessed things like a snake because it sheds its skin, so it always has a new look. As good as their guesses were, nobody got the answer. Which was the animal gnu always has a new look. I know my brain runs a bit slow, but this answer doesn't make sense to me. And it doesn't sound like a answer any kid of 12 and under, or even a 16 year old would think of. Thoughts?

Joe Kelly was the moderator for the series, and the Quiz Kids, who were referred to as being genius' with IQs of 135 to 180 (some above 200). The series was broadcast on NBC, ABC and CBS from 1940 to 1953.

THE QUIZ KIDS

Some of the questions these kids answer are nothing short of mind-blowing. What a different time it was. No Internet, no Google. Just a radio, possibly television and newspapers. These kids are very well read and smarter than many of todays adults by comparison.. I found the most frustrating episode to listen to was with Jack Benny because he wouldn't keep quiet and I just wanted to hear the kids. If anyone knows which episode the Elks (lodge) were the challengers, please let me know. I loved Harvey's answer to "Let's get to know the Elks".. (Harvey busted into a very detailed explanation of the elk (animal) and it was fantastic.
