Most of the “washtub weepers” were little more than attempt to grab the attention of bored housewives long enough to spread the message of how important it was to buy the sponsor’s cleaning products. Against the Storm was allowed to carry a more political message. The series was given the green light on the same day that Great Britain declared war on the Nazis. The writing assignment was given to soap opera veteran Sandra Michael, a well known pacifist with strong anti-Nazi feelings.
