Arnold Grimm’s Daughter was an excellent example of “romance in the afternoon”, but you might not want to call it a”soap opera” since it was sponsored by General Mills and not a soap company. Soap or flour, the show has everything to get a housewife weeping, including a beautiful young girl in love, a heroic love interest who dies tragically during the series, his son now left to be raised by a single mother, her father who objects to her marriage and then has his business fall on hard times. The whole package is wrapped with a ribbon of swelling organ music.
