Suspense was one of the best radio programs of all time, and it was simply too good not to copy. The other American networks had to create their own imitations, but the BBC was able to copy the program almost directly, changing little more than the title and the host. The result was Appointment With Fear which used the same scripts, even the same music! The British “man in black” was veteran actor Valentine Dyall who hosted 9 of the ten series. "Appointment With Fear" was the British version of the American series, "Suspense." The British were very much enamored with the Suspense series. So much so the BBC Launched their own version of Suspense on September 11th, 1943 and called it Appointment with fear, complete with the Man in Black and scripts by John Dickson Carr, but with different titles. For example, the "Suspense" program of May 11th, 1943 was a very strange Dickson Carr script called "Mr. Markham, Antique Dealer." That exact same script was later used on the BBC series, "Appointment With Fear" on April 13th, 1944, Also known as "The Speaking Clock."
