Dark Fantasy was a horror/ suspense thriller old time radio program that consisted of thirty-one (31) short episodes that aired from November 21, 1941 until June 19, 1942 broadcasting from Station WKY in Oklahoma City. Though the anthology barely made a year of air time, it managed to capture a huge audience due to the creepy and disturbing nature of its narratives. Each story in the series dealt with the secrets of the unknown, ranging anywhere from bone-chilling tales from the crypt, science fiction and murder mysteries.

In the golden age of radio, Dark Fantasy was the breath of fresh air that revived interest in the horror genre. Also known for his work on The Mysterious Traveler and The Sealed Book, Scott Bishop managed to merge the supernatural with science fiction, and injected it with a twist of old-fashioned folklore. Featuring this anthology series that was dedicated to dealings with the unknown with stories of horror, science fiction and murder. It originated from WKY-Oklahoma City, and was broadcast on the NBC network from 1941 to 1942. Writer for the series was Scott Bishop, and Keith Payton was the announcer.

Oklahoma's Skirvin Towers circa 1937 In 1920, radio station 5XT went on the air as an experimental radio station in Earl Hull’s home in Oklahoma City. Mr. Hull and his partner, H.S. Richards, had learned their radio experience from their service in World War I. Indeed they first 'powered' their radio with a reported 'three pint jars containing a solution of borax and water, into each of which was placed a pair of lead electrodes'. In 1921, Hull and Richards, were granted the call letters 'WKY' for a radio station at 1040 kilocycles. The listed owner was 'The WKY Radio Shop'. By 1922 radio station WKY was granted a federal license for Oklahoma City, OK. Edward King Gaylord's Oklahoma Publishing Company purchased the license in 1925 for a reported $5,000.00 and began broadcasting as WKY, Oklahoma City, as the Radiophone Company, a subsidiary of the Oklahoma Publishing Company, publisher of The Daily Oklahoman. The station reopened in the Plaza Court Building at Northwest Tenth Street, and Classen Drive. Its broadcast tower and transmitter stood two miles away, near Northwest Thirty-ninth Street. The station made a profit throughout the early years of the Great Depression. In response to this early success, Gaylord added state-of-the art technology in 1936, making it one of the Nation's most sophisticated broadcasting facilities of its day. Mr. Gaylord's gamble was viewed as a reported 'beacon of hope' during the dustbowl years of The Great Depression. He also observed the extraordinary success of the highly popular early Grand Ole Opry broadcasts from WSM-AM from Nashville, KY. WKY also moved to the Skirvin Towers in downtown Oklahoma City in 1936, at Broadway and N.W. 1st Street, installing a new Kilgen pipe organ, and three new studios. The Kilgen Pipe Organ is the source of the eerie organ music heard at the opening of each episode of Dark
