Written and directed by celebrated author Wyllis Cooper, the widely acclaimed old time radio program Quiet, Please was first aired on June 8, 1947 over the Mutual Broadcasting System. In this period, several similarly themed anthologies graced the American airwaves. However, it was this series that garnered notoriety during the golden age of radio and was lauded as an innovative and creative work of genius by both critics and academics alike. In fact, Professor Richard J. Hand from Glamorgan University praised Quiet, Please as an “extraordinary body of work,” and its writer Cooper as “one of the greatest authors of horror radio.” Quiet, Please was a mish mash of several literary genres, with supernatural encounters gaining the most prominence. Tales of the absurd were narrated by Ernest Chappell, who portrayed most of the series lead characters. His talent in fleshing out the gristly and morbid narratives paved the way for this old radio show to gain popularity among its listeners. One of the most notable episodes in the anthology is “The Thing on the Fourble Board,” which tells the story of a roughneck oil driller who unearths an ancient and horrific creature during a routine dig. Chappell breathes such life into each tale and transports the listener into a surreal world where monsters and alien beings exist outside the imagination. One of the scariest shows that I have ever heard is "The Shadow People" from The Hall Of Fantasy. Listen with the lights out! Wyllis Cooper had written /Lights Out/ before Arch Oboler took it over. Later, in, I believe, the 40s (somebody correct me) Cooper revived his craft with the series /Quiet Please/. Maybe that's what you're thinking of.

The imagination of the listener adds a personal touch to the suspense. The mind of each individual listener contributes to the story in a manner that's unique to that listener, adding an intensity to the experience that enhances what the writers and actors created. They say that in all art forms, the difference between good and great is not what's included, but what's left out, for the viewer/listener to provide, drawing the audience into a relationship with the art. OTR and books provide room for the listener/reader to participate in the story. Sadly, most of today's movie and TV presents 100% of the audio and visual to the audience, leaving no room for the imagination of the audience to participate. This is why I love OTR and books more than modern-day TV and movies!

I think the horror shows that are really successful use good writing relying on the imagination (brain painting) plus aspects of audio medium that are unique, like sound fx - Oboler's short "The Dark" comes to mind. I think someone should tell a radio version of the film "Insidious" - that story has a lot going for it conversion-wise.

I used to listen to "Quiet Please" before going to sleep. Was it the late hour I listened to episodes or my age, but they were difficult to track. They seemed surreal to me. However, what I could understand the programs were unlike what I heard before and well crafted.

This dark fantasy radio series featured Ernest Chappell as host and star. It was created, written and directed by a master of horror, Wyllis Cooper. It was broadcast on Mutual and ABC from 1947 to 1949.

QUIET PLEASE

Listening to Quiet Please (“There Are Shadows Here”) and the perfume Russian Leather is repeatedly referenced. Never heard of it, so I went online. It’s a MAN’S cologne, first marketed in the 1960s. Quiet Please may have used it as a takeoff on the English Leather we’re familiar with, first marketed in 1949 (it may have been in articles in 1948, when the show was written). There IS an English Leather cologne for men, by Creed, first sold in 1791, by royal decree. Maybe Wyllis Cooper had heard of the Creed cologne and riffed on it.
