Spoiler : This is a strange one. For one, it's more "science-fictiony" than other Hermit's Cave episodes I've listened to. It also feels like they tried to cram more story than they could comfortably fit into less than 24 minutes, though I don't know if expanding the runtime would have improved it much. In short, this episode is a mess. I listened to the first nine minutes, then started the episode over again because I felt like I must have missed some important details. However, listening to it the second time, I came to the realization that the problem wasn't that I was too tired to follow the narrative. Rather, the problem was with the writing and pacing of the episode. Tired or no, I think I was able to follow this nonsense about as well as anybody could be expected to, considering that they omit or gloss over a fair amount of information that would probably have made the plot slightly more coherent. Spoilers from this point forward... First, we're introduced to the scientist who is working to bring dead people back to life through some mysterious means that is never adequately explained. As is so often the case in stories like this, he's warned that he's meddling in things that are best left alone. His wife tells him that if we were meant to conquer death, someone would have already done it. Imagine telling that to a doctor trying to cure cancer or any other disease. Without warning, the script skips forward in time and now we learn that the scientist has made his discovery, but instead of taking the time to explore how it's affected the world, which might have been a more interesting story, the main focus is on his assistant's selfish plan to murder the woman who jilted him, then revive her while somehow also discarding the part of her personality that prioritized her career over their relationship. How this is supposedly possible is yet another thing that is never explained. Of course, things don't go according to plan. I guess the implication is that messing with the mind somehow invites some unknown and powerful foreign entity to take over the dead person's body and it punishes the scientists accordingly for their hubris. Maybe if the story had had more room to breathe, it wouldn't have left me feeling so frustrated.
