Al Jolson would be immortal for The jazz Singer, Hollywood’s first feature length talkie. The 1927 film would have been a remarkable capstone to what had already been a remarkable show biz career, but Jolson was no where near being done entertaining. Radio was still in its infancy when the film was released, and a sure sign on the radio that your show was to be taken seriously was for Jolson to appear as a guest. Of course, sponsors could not get enough of Jolson for their own shows. In addition to TheAl Jolson Colgate Program in 1943, Jolson hosted Kraft Music Hall from 1947 to 1949. The next year, Jolson was named "Personality of the Year" by the Variety Clubs of America. When Jolson appeared on Bing Crosby's radio show, he attributed his receiving the award to his being the only singer not to make a record of Mule Train, which had been a widely covered hit of that year (four different versions, one of them by Crosby, had made the top ten on the charts).
