If anyone deserved the title of World’s Greatest Entertainer, it had to be Al Jolson. Although his popular black face appearances would be considered insensitive today, Jolson was instrumental in helping to break the color barrier on Broadway. The son of a cantor and an immigrant, Jolson was the first entertainer to put his career aside to entertain the troops overseas in WWI. He insisted on being allowed to perform wherever there “is an American serviceman who wouldn’t mind listening to ‘Sonny Boy’ or ‘Mammy’...”
