The Second World War was arguably America’s finest hour. It was also a hugely expensive effort, one that the US government could never afford.Unless the government was able to convince someone to give them a loan. No source was beyond consideration, but the favored finance source was the American people.
Savings bonds saved the day. Several different War Bond Drives asked Americans to give part of their paychecks to help pay for the War. Not only this help to pay for the “boots, beans, bullets and black oil” needed to prosecute the War, it was a way for the common man to feel that they had a stake in the conflict. Hollywood celebrities came out in force to help remind people how important it was to contribute, meaning that the Treasury Department provided some best entertainment around.
